Boubacar Traoré, also known as Kar Kar (meaning “the dribbler”, he was an ace football player in his youth) is a pioneer of modern Malian music. Born into a noble family from the town of Kayes in 1942, he has had his highs (as the voice of Malian independence on Radio- Mali in the 1960s he was a star) and lows (his fade-out from the Malian music scene, the death of his wife, Pierrette). The ups and downs of his career led him to France and London, where he recorded two discs, Mariama (1990) and Kar Kar (1992). At the initiative of the Revue Noire, he produced his third disc in Bamako, Les enfants de Pierrette (1995), featuring Malian greats such as Ali Farka Touré, Toumani Diabaté and Kélétigui Diabaté. Then, he went looking for Baba Dramé in his hometown of Kayes to record another album. His childhood friend accompanies him on the calabash on Sa Golo (1996). Maciré followed in 2000 and in 2001 he was the subject of a moving documentary called Je Chanterai Pour Toi (I Will Sing For You) directed by Jacques Sarasin, and released an album of the same name (2002). In 2005 he released Kongo Magni, followed in 2011 by Mali Denhou.
